This blog will be regulary updated by top editors at The Chronicle.
Mission Statement:
The purpose of the DH blog will be to offer a forum for The Chronicle’s top news editors to comment on the biggest news in the newspaper each week. Currently the daily reporter blog addresses doubts, concerns or behind-the-scenes stories reporters have from their reporting experience but the editors’ blog can take a step back to provide a more contextual analysis of the news.
The Chronicle frequently publishes stories with extensive histories, but we often cannot provide that type of institutional background within a 12-inch story. The blog is our opportunity to give readers that background, to fill in the blanks on the stories they read. So when a student is murdered on campus, the blog can ask when the last time something of that nature happened and possibly even ask why undergraduates as a whole seemed so emotionally detached from the entire episode. Or when Mike Nifong declares bankruptcy, we can use the blog to question whether the embattled district attorney hasn’t been through enough, or if he is just playing his cards right for the first time since the case began.
Moreover, the contributors to the editors’ blog are uniquely qualified to publish the material we foresee in the blog. As older students and the students selecting the stories that appear in the paper, the department heads are attune to the many angles present in each story and will be able to present those views in a form that we hope will encourage both The Chronicle and our readers to follow up on published stories to see if there is something that we have missed, some voices that we failed to hear.
In addition to providing context on current news, the blog will be a forum for DHs to publish research and reporting from long-term stories they will all be working on throughout the semester. The effort will be an interesting way to involve readers in the reporting process and hopefully increase readership of the stories when they are published in their final form.
The DH blog will be updated twice weekly and will be managed by myself. The nine department heads including: Chelsea Allison, Shuchi Parikh, Joe Clark, Rebecca Wu, Gabby McGlynn, Naureen Khan, Katherine Macilwaine, Jiajia Zahang and myself will post on a rotation that I will be responsible for organizing and following up with. The blog will be updated each Sunday and Wednesday.
